Current Features

Portability Features

DustyNotes will run on any Java-enabled cellphone or PDA (MIDP 2 and above). Download DustyNotes onto your mobile device and try it out.

Recording Features

• Enter detailed information - You can create subject records with detailed information about your observations. Data that can be recorded include:
  
  
  • Classication - include Species, Genus, Family, Order, Kingdom, Phylum. You can also enter common names of the animal or plant.
  • Location, date, and time - include information on locality, town, province/state, and country.
  • Habitat - you can add detailed information on the habitat and microhabitat where you observed or collected the animal or plant.
  • Weather - add information on the current weather.
  • Behavior - add quick information about the behavior of the animal when it was observed or collected.
  • Collection ID - you can create your own specimen classification.
  
  
  
• DustyNotes - for every subject record, you can create as many additional Notes as you want. These Notes will be attached to the main subject record when you upload or email the data.
  
  
• Search and View records - you can search for and view subject records through keywords using the mobile application search form.
  
  
• Edit Subject Records and Notes - you can edit all subject records and Notes at any time by searching for and selecting specific records and notes.
  
  
• Preferences - You can set it up so you avoid repetitive entry of information during record creation. AFter you set your preferences, every time you create a new record, the corresponding fields will already be pre-populated. Some of the data you can set include:
  
  
  • User preferences - includes name, email, and other information about the user.
  • Subject Preferences - includes classication, habitat, and weather information.
  • System preferences

Integration Features*

• Upload - you can upload all records or selected records to your Group Home on the internet in order to share your results with friends, family and colleagues.
  
  
• Email - you can email all records or selected records to yourself or to any email address.

* In order to email or upload your data, your mobile device must be able to connect to the internet. Charges might apply depending on your carrier and phone plan.

Recording Features

• Image Capture* - You can use the camera on your mobile device to take pictures of the animal or plant and then add these pictures to the subject record or Note. When you upload or email the records, these pictures will be included with the upload or email.

  *Note: this feature only available for mobile devices with cameras and the Java MMAPI.
  
  

• GPS integration* - If your mobile device has a built-in GPS receiver, it may be possible for DustyNotes to automatically pre-fill GPS location information in new records when they are created.

  *Note: this feature only available for mobile devices with GPS and the Java Location API.

You can download checklists and keys to your DustyNotes in order to help identify animals and plants.

* In order to download material into DustyNotes, your mobile device must be able to connect to the internet. Charges might apply depending on your carrier and phone plan.

Group Home Features

Once you have uploaded your data, you can view the data as points on a map using your desktop PC. Groups can also combine their data to form comprehensive distribution maps of species.
